NEW BSI STANDARD AVAILABLE FROM FMO
The new international standard for mounted lenses, which comes into effect on 1st February 2010, has been widely welcomed by leaders of both the optical industry and profession.
BS EN ISO 21987: 2009 – Ophthalmic Optics – Mounted Lenses replaces the 1989 British Standard BS2738 Spectacles Lenses – Part 1. Bringing three major changes relating to cylinder axis and centration tolerances the standard is a vital reference for all dispensers and prescription labs.
Explained Ronald Rabbetts, Chairman of the British Standards Spectacle Committee –
“In the UK we have had a British Standard for this aspect of optics since 1956 and it has been modified many times since then. Many countries have not had such a standard and as part of the European Community it was agreed that an international standard was needed, to incorporate existing guides and to provide one for those countries which did not operate to one.”
“It s important that opticians are aware of the details of the new standard as this will be the benchmark to which labs and glazing facilities will be producing spectacles from February,” he added.
The UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, USA, Japan, Australia and China have all worked together to produce this, which is now available from:
British Standards: 020 8996 7000 or
The FMO, with a discount for members: 020 7298 5123
Additional Notes: Tolerances on the cylinder axis and on optical centration of progressive-power lenses have been widened, so there is no risk of items being rejected under the new standard that were allowed under BS 2738 - 1. The centration tolerance for single vision and multifocal lenses is fairly similar.
