FMO UNITES OPTICAL INDUSTRY FOR 2010

The FMO’s annual general meeting drew more industry leaders than ever before, with companies represented from all aspects of retail and manufacturing optics, and relevant support services, including new overseas members from Sri Lanka.

Keen to network and share market knowledge, FMO Chairman, Barry Dibble, said the organisation’s members “are remaining focused to ensure that we are best placed for recovery, as stronger, wiser and leaner companies”.

He attributed the 100+ attendees at the AGM to the tangible benefits that were demonstrated by key speakers: from Willis Commercial Network on the current insurance market and importance for securing the best – not always cheapest cover – for optical businesses from the 50 or so companies available.

“While managing your costs in a recession is vital, it is a false economy to reduce sums insured,” said Paul Maynard from Willis Commercial Network.

Fraud was an issue that was discussed –
“Recession often exposes fraud due to the tighter financial scrutiny,” added Paul. This highlighted the benefits of the FMO Bad Payers’ List, produced each month under licence from the Office of Fair Trading.

David Hewlett, Chief Executive of FODO, outlined the need for closer co-operation between the optical bodies, and his words were warmly welcomed by the audience. Also speaking was Harinder Paul, promoting the role of Vision Care for Homeless People, the UK charity that has been adopted by the FMO, and is gaining support from many of the members.

Sri Lankans, Diluk and Jayantha Abeygoonerathne from Highray Enterprises, who had travelled to the UK for the meeting – were delighted by the welcome that they received and look forward to sharing many of the benefits of membership.

Barry Dibble, FMO Chairman, and Malcolm Polley, FMO Chief Executive, are pictured receiving a silver elephant, a goodwill gift of Sri Lanka from the FMO’s newest members.
